Grow your own saffron, one of the world's most expensive spices! Once established, these amazing little bulb-looking corms will continue to grow and multiply year after year to bloom bright purple flowers. Harvest the red stigmas in fall, dry them for use in cooking.
Planting and care:
- Plant in the Fall: Get "corms" (like bulbs) and plant them about 3 inches deep in the ground, spacing them a few inches apart.
- Sunny Spot: Saffron loves sunshine! Make sure it gets lots of sun each day.
- Water Wisely: Water a bit after planting, then mostly leave it alone. It likes things a bit dry in the summer.
- Feed a Little: Give it a little plant food in the spring to help it grow strong.
- Protect from Pests: Watch out for animals that might want to eat it.
- Harvest the Red: In the fall, the flowers will bloom. Carefully pick the tiny red threads from inside – that's the saffron! Dry it well before you use it.
